Once something becomes a habit it can be very difficult to change. It is said that it takes about a month of doing something to make it a habit. Some good habits like exercising, healthy eating and positive attitudes may not need to be changed but, the bad habits can be very hard to live with and change.

Changing habits to improve your personal life is always worthwhile. The bad habits that people develop can be especially hard to change because they are the ones we consider to be personal. If there is an addiction involved like smoking or drinking, there is a variety of professional help available and a person should take full advantage of them.

In order to make a change you need recognize it and want to change it. You are the only one with the power to do it. There are plenty of others that have been in the same situation, no matter what it is, and you may or may not benefit from their experience and success. Whether you will or not there are steps you can take that will make your attempts to change your lifestyle more successful.

1. Stop making excuses and start taking action. Change is always hard but you have to start somewhere. Instead of thinking about how hard it will be to change, think about how good it will be when you have changed your bad habit.
2. Allow yourself to have setbacks but don’t let them stop you.
3. Reward yourself with something you enjoy. Don’t pick up another bad habit but, reward yourself often even if it is just a pat on the back for a job well done.
4. Replace your bad habit with a good one or something that you might enjoy. Start a new hobby or spend more time on ones that you already enjoy.
5. Take small steps to change bad habits. Don’t expect it will happen overnight. Developing bad habits does not happen overnight and they won’t change that way either. You can expect to struggle a little with making any changes.
6. Focus on changing one habit at a time. If you have more than one bad habit you want to change prioritize and give yourself time for each one.
7. Make it public by asking friends and family for help. This provides some accountability, although no one will be with you every minute it may help to know that you have others that are supporting your efforts.
